Cruz is a Jaquin, who was poised to succeed Chief Zephyr, as leader of the Jaquin clan in the kingdom of Avalor, but being brash and egotistical, he grew overly impatient and tried to get rid of Chief Zephyr, until he was brought to justice by Princess Elena and her friends. He was quickly broken out of prison by his twin sister, Vestia, both becoming fugitives, and were forced to team-up with Shuriki's band, despite the Jaquins being loathed by the humans.
Shuriki wanted to take over Avalor and kill Elena, but during a showdown in Nueva Vista, Elena bested her and seemingly killed Shuriki, instead. Cruz and Vestia were left with Victor and Carla. This partnership soon disintegrated, as Victor kept on referring to Cruz as a "beast."
Without humans to work with or for, Cruz and Vestia sneaked back into their home realm of Vallestrella, where they grew tired of being fugitives and wanted amnesty, but not the easy way. They let loose a fiery Anchimon, thinking they could then capture it and become heroes. But the was uncontrollable. They admitted what they had done and helped capture the Anchimon. King Verago forgave them and they were welcomed back in.
